Acupuncture
All acupuncture is based on traditional oriental medical theory whereby needles are inserted at certain points or “tsubo”on the body to stimulate and regulate the flow of energy. Traditional acupuncture is practised according to complex theoretical models of energy flow and tongue and pulse observation are used to make a diagnosis.
In Japan, acupuncture has developed hand in hand with massage and the acupuncturist will combine the application of traditional theory with sophisticated manual diagnostic techniques. A treatment session will therefore involve massage and acupressure (shiatsu) as well as needles.
The needles used in Japan tend to be finer than those used in China, and they are inserted via a sterile plastic tube. Sometimes they will be left in the body for a few minutes and sometimes the therapist will work with the needle until the desired effect is produced. When the needles are inserted into specific points or areas of deep-seated tension it stimulates the circulation and flow of energy through the body and releases contracted muscles and tendons.
Acupuncture should not be painful but you may be aware of a dull ache or short-lived shooting sensation as tension in the body is released.
I only use 100% sterile disposable needles.
